I was not aware there was a precompiled version of lzip. Is this for all
platforms?

I think so. A version for Mac can be found at http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/lzip

A bit limited. You have to install the Fink installation system. They also only offer a limited range of installations. For example, only older versions of lzip if you are not using the latest operating system. It also does not say what it is installing. If it is a Unix executable, then it is not as simple as double-clicking the archive to expand it. And even if it did, lzip does not untar so that has to be done manually, whereas gzip does.

All in all, gzip seems more user-friendly.
