Don't limit ddrescue to mailx or whatever else. What if one wants to get
notified in other ways? - sms/whatsapp/etc..
Just do something like:

system(" /whatever/user/provides ");
all you need to do inside ddrescue is to call this system("..."); on the
right place (depending on user's input)...

You might want to configure Postfix to deliver emails:
