Actually, the wikipedia article on the ARccOS copy protection that you could have ran into, specifically states that ddrescue can circumvent it due to its skipping of scrambled sectors:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARccOS_protection

However, if ddrescue does not report any errors on your 'known good disc', it indicates that this disc has no protection worse than CSS (i.e. no ARccOS). Having playback problems with that copied disc sounds actually troublesome and may require further investigation.

I then ran ddrescue on a known good disc. ddrescue takes less than an
hour to process this disc and it reports no errors at all. I mount
the ISO image and it will not play using any DVD player software I
have, so I installed VLC and it does play but it displays the
“Extras” menu a the initial screen and you have to hunt for the Menu
button to get it to actually start.

Are you trying to copy copy-protected DVDs?

The copy-protection mechanism may prevent the player from playing the DVD. The fact that VLC can play the DVD suggests that the data itself was copied correctly.

Best regards,
Antonio.
