In some situations, I think it might be possible to recover a little
more data from a CD/DVD with "dvdisaster" than with ddrescue. Maybe
you could try that? I think this post is an example:

If it were me, I'd also suggest for you or the family to keep both the
CD and cdimage file(s) made just in case different combinations of
options for "photorec" (or other software) reveal more files or better
intact files later.. or even in case newer versions of recovery
programs are able to recover more in the future.
