There is one thing that I think may be important for this option. There should be a special condition if there was no data read since the last screen update (failed read). You can't just display the read buffer as it is unknown what it would contain, and you don't want to display zeros as that would be misleading. Possibilities would include blanking out the preview output, or using some odd character in place of the hex (XX XX XX XX). Another possibility would be to leave the last good data on the screen, but then a person would have to be paying attention to see that it wasn't changing and look at the last good read time, and not everybody will pay attention.
