Sadly this does happen, and more frequently than you would
expect. Imagine if your drive has a failed head on one of the
platters, the entire platter is now inaccessible and thus
you've lost the ability to read all that data.
*sometimes* if you're lucky after it's done the normal first
pass and it comes back to trimming the failed blocks you'll get
some of the large block back.
The only one thing I can think of for you to try is to
deliberately make ddrescue start at a position within the large
'dead block' using the -i option.
