In the testing I have been doing, starting ddrescue at a location next to a
known good area and working away from the good area resulted in successful
recovery of data every single time. I think that makes these areas good
candidates for checking before areas surrounded by bad sectors, simply
because the odds are that the sector next to a good sector will also be
good.
