I think you shouldn't use ddrescue then. Ddrescue is a recovery tool for 
experts who know what they are doing. Its use by newbies is very dangerous.

try `ddrescue /dev/hdd5 /dev/sd1 logfile'

This is not a GNU ddrescue error message. Are you sure the device is 
correctly mounted, and is not totally broken?
