I think you shouldn't use ddrescue then. Ddrescue is a recovery tool for experts who know what they are doing. Its use by newbies is very dangerous.
Make an image of say hdd5 to sd1 as an image file and also to make a log file so I can stop and resume from where I stopped.
try `ddrescue /dev/hdd5 /dev/sd1 logfile'
I have made the output device read/write and even the input device read/write but keep getting the message "unable to open input device."
This is not a GNU ddrescue error message. Are you sure the device is correctly mounted, and is not totally broken?
