Did you not notice the comment immediately before those lines, or did
you just choose to ignore it?

The above URL has a more detailed discussion, but the short version is
that there is a bug in the existing code that can cause serious data
loss, it doesn't work in client/server mode, and there are lots of
little things that don't work right.
