(2) For those who still have or use :extssh: with their files and want to interoperate with command line CVS, attached is an update of the earlier patch, now against cvs-1.11.17-8.RHEL4.src.rpm. It also fixes a bug -- the mapping table from enums to names was not expanded when extssh was introduced. No, this patch does not have documentation or testcases, so I don't expect it to be committed.
I committed a variation on your patch anyhow. I added :extssh: as a simple synonym of the :ext: access method on both stable and feature to leave the $CVS_RSH processing intact. I haven't documented it anywhere but the NEWS file, as I really don't want this to confuse people. Users of Eclipse may not even notice, except that their CVS command line client suddenly starts to interoperate with Eclipse workspaces.
I neglected tests since it this is a relatively unimportant change and most of its functionality will be tested by the tests of :ext:.
