I just ran it under Purify and it found a read of uninitialized memory,
which could certainly explain the SEGV.  The current cvs1-11-x-branch
development version doesn't show the error, which is consistent with
Mark's report that it doesn't crash.  So, the problem would appear to be
fixed.
