Details:

I first discovered this in 6.10 but also see it in 7.1:

address@hidden:tmp[0]$ $p/chmod --version ; mkdir foo ; $p/chmod 3777 foo ; ls
-ld foo ; $p/chmod 0 foo ; ls -ld foo
chmod (GNU coreutils) 7.1
