It is probably your locale that treats > and < as identical.  Read the
FAQ:
http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/coreutils-faq.html#Sort-does-not-sort-in-normal-order_0021

and try running 'LC_ALL=C sort' to see the difference.

You may want to consider upgrading - that version is several years old;
the latest stable version is 6.10.
