FYI, I've just pushed Ed Avis' changes for improved ls --color output.
>From NEWS:
ls --color no longer outputs unnecessary escape sequences
That also required changes to keep dircolors.c in sync,
and I have added checks and tests to ensure that the two
programs remain aligned.
