'groups' reports the groups that the process is currently in.  If you
use groups with a username then it reports the groups that the
specified user name are in, if that user were to log in at that time.

The groups that your process is assigned to is fixed at the time that
you log into the machine.  If you change the groups after you log in
then you would need to log in again in order to get the new group
changes.  This is typically the issue when someone reports that they
current groups are different from the one reported by the command with
a specified username.
