Justification is what's lacking.  "It's convenient" isnt' enough.
Adding a new option is a pretty big deal, in some sense.
For example, adding an option to cut may be nixed if you
can already get the same functionality by using awk.

Your script has the advantage that it is portable (I presume; didn't look),
while any reliance on a new touch option would work only with
recent coreutils.
