Most likely, this is not due to a bug in sort, but a misunderstanding on
your part about locales.  Read this:
http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/coreutils-faq.html#Sort-does-not-sort-in-normal-order_0021

then try LC_ALL=C sort, and see if it gives the desired results.
