It's not just GNU make; the Autoconf documentation says "recent" make.
However, at this point Solaris 2.6 no longer qualifies as "recent", so
I don't think to worry about its VPATH bugs.

As it happens I looked this up yesterday, and found that Solaris 2.6
is so old that Sun will stop supporting it on July 23, which means
that we can stop worrying about it then too.  Here's a handy URL that
