Summer of Code projects

Given the overall level of activity on the coreutils project, I'm
slightly surprised there have been no suggestions for Summer of Code
projects relating to it (see
http://www.gnu.org/software/soc-projects/guidelines.html).

Is it just that there are no sizable standalone tasks that a student
could feasibly complete in a couple of months, or is there some other
reason?
