Please post questions about coreutils to the bug-coreutils list, as
requested in the 'mv --help' output, rather than sending private mail to
just one of the developers. You will then be more likely to get an answer
by someone who knows (the collective knowledge of list subscribers is
greater than that of the developer you randomly choose), and your question
and answer will be archived for future reference so that people can find
it via a web search.

According to Debarshi Ray on 12/7/2005 6:38 AM:

Coreutils 5.2.1 is old - the latest stable version is 5.93
(http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-coreutils/2005-11/msg00058.html).
Consider upgrading.

Meanwhile, the behavior you are asking about is required by POSIX
(http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/mv.html).
