Not sure if this is related:
$ ls -og ??; grep a ??
lrwxrwxrwx 1 2 2005-11-18 07:08 xx -> yy
grep: xx: No such file or directory
User thinks: the problem is really
"grep: yy: No such file or directory",
and that might be a better message.
Same with many other commands other than grep.
