The 'cp' program copies files by reading them into memory and writing
them back to disk at the new location.  If you are seeing Input/Output
errors that means that the filesystem is reporing these errors to the
'cp' command.  The filesystem is itself reporting errors from the
hardware disk drive.

In summary these errors usually indicate a disk drive failure.
