Hmm...  Does that mean that there is a bug in the current version?  Or
that there is not?  I'm confused.  I was able to reproduce the case
using the fileutils-4.1 du.

  du --version
  du (fileutils) 4.1
  du -skc --exclude=b *
  8       a
  8       b
  8       c
  8       d
  32      total

It seems things are "as desired" in the current version.

  du --version
  du (coreutils) 5.2.1
  du -skc --exclude=b *
  4       a
  4       c
  4       d
  12      total
