I found a bug for diff in redhat linux9.0. 

  The sample files:

       x.txt :

          abcdefg

          abcdefg

          abcdefg

          abcdefg

       y.txt :

          abcdefg

          abdefg

          abcdefg

          abdefg

diff x.txt y.txt 

  the result is:

          1a2

            > abdefg

          3,4c4

            < abcdefg

            < abcdefg

              ---

            > abdefg
