That's odd, as I don't get a problem when running "make check" on my
Solaris 8 (sparc) host.  I built with up-to-date Solaris 8 patches,
with GCC 3.4.1, and configured with "configure CFLAGS='-g -O2'".

What kind of terminal are you using, exactly?  Are you running inside
a local xterm, or what?

If you're still having the problem, can you please try running the
following Bourne shell commands, and seeing what output you get?

cd tests/stty
VERBOSE=yes make TESTS=row-col-1 check
