ls: sort with directories first

Hello,


in searching for something to make "ls" show directories at the top, before any
files, I have come across the "patch for ls 4.1 -- Sort with directories first"
posted on thebug-fileutils mailing list by Philip Flip Kromer on Mon 22 Oct
2001 01:53:44-0500 (CDT).

However, it did not seem to have made it into the official source tree,
so I am asking whether it(*) could be added, now maybe?

(*)Of course, a patch for a more recent coreutils, e.g.
   http://linux01.org:2222/f/hxtools/patches/ls-5.2.1-dirfirst.diff
