This sounds very much like a school homework assignment.  In which
case it would be inappropriate to provide ready made solutions.

But honestly the exact problem you poised would seen to need some
programing in order to accomplish.  That would probably be easier done
in ruby or perl than in shell but could be done any any of the three.
