I tried, and I got something more; a doc/latex directory full of things. 
so I tried "cd doc/latex; make" and I got

(please, correct the above error).  at last, I decided to "cd doc/html && 
lynx index.html" that seems to be usable.  yes, I realize that this was a 
beta release; but check better, next time, before putting things around on 
ftp.gnu.org (unless you love the 'rero' way of thinking much more that me 
:-)
