Patch for Socket (read/write and network interface index)

        Hi, Donald Wycoff has recently submitted a patch through the
Savannah patch manager. He proposes new methods for Socket: two new
read/write for blocks -with separators and timeout-, as well as
methods for getting the network interface index for a given interface
name, and joining a multicast group on a specified interface.

        I find it quite useful and would apply the patch soon, but
perhaps you would like to make some comments...
