It'a an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, 12 cores plus hyperthreading.

Yeah, probably. But IIRC some packages run configure in each
subdirectory or so. I haven't built such a package in a while, but
unless they can parallelize the configures against each other from
the top level, it seems this would take rather long (relatively) on
modern CPUs.
