Hmm,
I re-updated GNU LD and it indeed seems to work fine.  I must've copied around
the wrong binary last time I tested.
It however seems to be broken in 2.21.51 release at least.

GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.21.52.20110623
works,
GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.21.51.20101214
doesn't.  Any idea when the problem was fixed?
