it seems you have incorrect timestamps on the files.

If you are building from the release tarball automake-1.9.6.tar.{bz2,gz},
m4/amversion.m4 should be newer than m4/amversion.in, so the sed command
whcih creates it should not be called.

Consequently, the command "cd .. && make  am--refresh" should not be run.

I apologize that I haven't noticed this problem in your previous report.
