If you're talking about this patch:

my understanding is that the patch wasn't accepted, because (as I
wrote in that email) it didn't fix the underlying problem, and the
Automake maintainers solved the problem in a different way, one that
still generates stamp-h1, stamp-h2 etc., files.  See
automake/lib/am/remake-hdr.am, automake/m4/init.m4,
automake/automake.in.

I agree that it's annoying to have multiple stamp-h* files, but I
don't think anyone has had the time to fix it, and I don't even know
whether it'd be practical to fix it.  Until/unless someone does fix
it, it might be simplest to follow Stepan's suggestion and add
stamp-h* to gettext's .cvsignore file.
