OTOH, it's the only AC_SUBST I know of which is not available in Automake.
Would you suggest that autoconf should mark @builddir@ as deprecated?

Perhaps this danger could be better addressed by an Automake warning?

It seems that you can set {,top_}{src,build}dir in Makefile.am;
is that good?  Perhaps Automake should give a warning in all these cases.
