Agreed.  And 1+2 achieves this.  I'll post a patch shortly.

Akim and I (and others) have talked about this before.  Unfortunately, we need
to add programmatic include path munging to m4 as a prerequisite.  It will
happen at some point though, everyone regards aclocal as a necessary evil.
