It seems difficult to satisfy everybody.
Believe me, I hear that :).
Right now the install targets are abbreviated, but the compile targets
are not. Maybe that inconsistency is the best compromise possible :).
I used to argue in favor of showing the actual commands. But after the
last few years of experience, I actually appreciate the abbreviated
command more because it makes debugging *easier*, because there is so
much less verbiage to wade through. That is, debugging of the commands
(exact options passed to install/gcc/etc.). Debugging of automake
itself is something else entirely, of course, but I'm assuming that's
not the argument here. Or is it?
For example, when I report something to bug-gcc or whatever, I just have
to strip out the automake dependency stuff.
I hate to say it, but it could be an option :(.
