bug with automake 1.6 and autoconf 2.53

I have a sun sparc solaris 2.7 machine.

When I type
./configure --prefix=/home/jdeifik
I get an error message saying that autoconf 2.52 or greater is required.

But I have autoconf 2.53 !

I commented out the lines in configure, but it is still a bug.
