can't build automake 1.6.1+ on redhat 7.2

I installed autoconf 2.53.

When I try to build automake (1.6.1 and the newest cvs version)
I get:

hecking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/gnu/fileutils/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for perl... /usr/local/bin/perl
configure: error: Autoconf 2.52 or better is required

In config.log:
onfigure:1225: result: /usr/gnu/fileutils/bin/install -c
configure:1236: checking whether build environment is sane
configure:1279: result: yes
configure:1312: checking for gawk
configure:1328: found /usr/bin/gawk
configure:1348: checking whether make sets ${MAKE}
configure:1368: result: yes
configure:1535: checking for perl
configure:1553: found /usr/local/bin/perl
configure:1565: result: /usr/local/bin/perl
configure:1588: cd conftest && eval ${SHELL}
/usr/local/src/gnu/cvs/automake/lib/missing --run autoconf -o /dev/null
conftest.ac
/usr/local/src/gnu/cvs/automake/lib/missing: line 48:  5344 Segmentation fault
    "$@"
configure:1591: $? = 1
configure:1593: error: Autoconf 2.52 or better is required

How do I debug this (I had problems with strace, and I played around with
looking at some of the output files -- with no results...)

Whatever is happening, it shouldn't report something which isn't so...

BTW,
: address@hidden;type autoconf
autoconf is hashed (/usr/gnu/autoconf/bin/autoconf)
: address@hidden;autoconf -V
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.53
