(regexp-opt nil t) => ""

Which does _not_ heed "If optional PAREN is non-nil, ensure that the
returned regexp is enclosed by at least one regexp grouping construct."
and matches everywhere instead of nowhere.

Probably enough to throw AUCTeX off track.
