I just installed Perl 5.12 from Debian experimental and the culprit
seems to be the following line in preview-dtxdoc.pl:

    $_=join("",@_);

If the line is commented out, at least there is significantly more
content in the output file.

I'm in course of looking through the Perl documentation in order to find
out what it does (in the context of the rest of the code in the file).
If somebody with some Perl knowledge could give me a hand, that would be
greatly appreciated.
