Okay, I've checked in a patch that is similar to yours.  .*? is used
instead of [^\"]* in the assumption that the file names are not broken
across newlines and that the former is a bit better performance-wise.
The quotation marks are stripped with `substring' which does not require
a new buffer to be created.

If possible please give it a try.
