Thanks.  When I use NTemacs 23 that was compiled months ago, everything gets back to normal.  Further, as you already rule out the possibility of bug in AUCTEX, I wonder whether some *new* features developed very recently couse that problem.

There seem to be serious problems: the images are severely affected:
the dimensions appear wrong (too large, mostly), the contents are
wrong.  The placement in the text is correct.  In addition, the word
"betragsmäßig" has a Japanese/Chinese Ideograph instead of "äß".

In short: your Emacs looks seriously broken.  No idea what might be
wrong with it, but it certainly is not a problem in AUCTeX.

It could also be a problem with GhostScript, but I somewhat doubt it.
