I can reproduce it under debian testing.  It appears that strings
longer than 12 are somehow misinterpreted by AP100 and garbage is
sent to popen.  It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the *
in the input or the fact that your /bin/sh is bash.

      OS←'echo 67890123'
sh: 1: Àüõ¤U: not found
