a2ps and level1.ppd

hello address@hidden,

when invoking a2ps (standard installation, just unpacked) it keeps on saying:

a2ps: cannot find file `level1.ppd': A file or directory in the path name does 
not exist.

A file with this name sits in /local/share/a2ps/ppd/level1.ppd,
but how can I tell a2ps to recognize it.
I RTFM and studied the FAQ, with no success.
What gives ?
