In the gnulib thread, Paul Eggert just made a nice argument for including 
the gettext version in the announcement.

So, let me ask my question a different way.  Would knowing the version of 
gettext have helped you rule out gettext as the culprit?  Even if your 
answer is no, Paul's argument has me thinking it could possibly help 
someone, and it doesn't seem to hurt to include it.
