[Axiom-mail] Axiom in TeXmacs problem

I'm using TeXmacs 1.0.5, and (as far as I know) the most recent tm_axiom file, under Linux.  But in my TeXmacs, Axiom doesn't respond properly to input commands.  I have to enter a command 4, 5 or more times before I get an output response, and often the output then is the result of a previous command.

Does anybody know what's likely to be going on, and how I can fix it?
