I am all thumbs as far as OSes go and I don't use my Mac that much except for
teaching and presentations. But Pierre Doucy's recommendations are good ones.
Since Mac OS X is BSD based, at least you can install whatever you want from the
linux world (for example tetex). You'll definitely need fink. You may also want
X-11 for Mac OS X, which should be on your Tiger OS installation disc, and if
not:

(older Mac OS X used XDarwin).
