The magazine Computing in Science & Engineering,
jointly published by the American Institute of Physics and the IEEE,
has published a series "review" type articles by Norman Chonacky and David Winch.
Chonacky is the magazine's editor in chief.

The articles are focused on the commercial packages Maple, Mathematica, and Matlab.
They appear in the Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/June, and July/Aug issues.

The series so far gives open source / free software packages
effectively no consideration or mention.

Cheers, Eugene Surowitz
