Well, please add some kind of example and this explanation to the
documentation. I don't care much whether you add it to avrdude.1 or
doc/avrdude.texi, or to both (I'm willing to add the missing half if
you do only one of both) - but without an example, I guess nobody will
be able to figure out how to use it unless they read this example here
in the mailing list.
