[avrdude-dev] Modify avrdude to accept new programmer?

Is there a place in the documentation that says how to add a new programmer?

I want to add tpi and maybe pdi to my vusbtiny build.  (
http://www.instructables.com/id/VUSBTiny-AVR-SPI-Programmer/) which is
basically a usbtiny clone.

The MCU side i can grok...but I am pretty lost in how AVRDUDE works.  It
would be nice just see a list of USB requests it sends, or if someone could
point me at a good place to start.
